Photo Adventure – Sunset Crater National Monument, Arizona

On the way to the Grand Canyon from Flagstaff, there’s two National Monuments just off the main road.  Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments are definitely worth the short detour.

Sunset Crater NM was an interesting place to travel through.  It is so different from the surrounding area.  There are black lava fields, reminiscent of our trip to the Big Island.  Driving out of the area you are driving through a colorful desert.  It’s amazing!

We actually went through the area twice, before and after a winter snowstorm.  The white snow against the black cinder covered landscape was beautiful.  I really think we’ll be back again someday when we can spend more time.  The area deserves more than just a quick drive through.

Fun fact, Sunset Crater was probably saved from major damage in the late 1920’s.  A large motion picture studio wanted to detonate explosives next to the mountain to create an avalanche.  Not surprisingly, this was for the movie “Avalanche!”
