When you ask my son why he loves Alaska, he says “just because.” Just because Alaska is gorgeous and full of adventure, he loves it. Imagine that? One of his favorite places was Alyeska.
Alyeska Alaska is easy for visitors to drive by. It is very close to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and looks like *just* a hotel. It is a hotel – but it is so much more. Alyeska is an adventure.
Park in the parking lot of the hotel and head towards the backside of the hotel. There you will find a gondola.
Here you must choose your own adventure. You can either walk up the mountain and eventually ride the gondola back down for free, or you can pay for the gondola ride (which was pretty costly – around $20 for adults). Most of you are going to want to opt for the gondola both ways despite the cost. It’s a pretty long, steep walk.
The gondola ride is pretty neat in itself. Sure, you get to look down at all those people that choose the hard way up the mountain but that’s not the best part. Rising above the trees and climbing above the clouds is an awesome feeling!
Once you reach the top you can use all that stored energy that you wisely didn’t use to climb up the mountain and take to the trails. Quite a few were closed when we visited, but they looked like they’d be lots of fun. We opted not to take the climb to the tip top of the mountain because the children had done quite a bit of hiking already that day (we also did the Byron Glacier Hike that morning).
So we just relaxed on top of the world.
Claire also decided to find out what mountains were made of by digging with a stick. Turns out it is made out of dirt and rocks. Now you know!
Once we headed back down the mountain, we took some time to pick berries before we left. Unfortunately, the bushes had been picked over a few days before in Alyeska’s Blueberry Festival, but the kids had a blast.
